What to do for a living? Is being your own boss better than working for others?

Some may think that the above is a silly question to ask, of course, being a boss is better if you can, you have the authority, the freedom and your decision is the one that matters (of course, it may be influenced by your team). However, even though being a boss is great, not everyone is willing to take the risk and try to start their own business. This is mainly due to the amount of effort, time and money a start up will need before it starts to make a profit. If you're unable to strive until the point where your efforts are realized and profits start to slowly accumulate, not only you may result in a loss, debts and you lose the opportunity cost of the salary you may make if you are working for others.

I used to have a friend who studied computer science saying that he would like to start his own business after he graduated from University. Of course, he was lucky to have a scholarship, if not, no way could the average citizens could afford the cost of a degree. However, he is 26 now and have not even graduated from University. I doubt he would even have sufficient capital to start a business once he graduated. Not only that, he would have to serve his bond for the scholarship for around four years. If he really does start his own business in future, he would be at least 30 years old, and if it is not successfully, not only he may not have the experience to securing a job in future, he may not be used to environment in which he has to work under someone else. Of course, it may or may not end up like I speculated, but the risk and uncertainty is what stopped many from starting up their own business. Also, some may worry that they may end up in debt if their business aren't successful. Some worry that they might need to spend too much time building their start up business that they don't have much time for their family and loved ones. Some may just have no idea what kind of business they want to go into. Some may lack the knowledge need to start a business and may not know where to acquire them. The list can go on and on.

I used to have the idea of starting my own business when I was young just because my dad is a boss, and my my mum used to be her own boss as well before one passed away and one currently ill. So why I am so poor, that's because the money was taken by my relatives due to the absence of a written will from my dad. As for my mum, it's because the place was demolished for future development, however, it's been more than 10 years, no such development had happened at all. The amount returned to her was much less than what the market price of her business is worth. However, there is no other choice since the land was not her, it was decided to be demolished and thus nothing more the citizens there could do. Well, it's just our luck I guess? Anyway, because of that, I have been thinking of what kind of business I am going to start myself since young. However, it's all just a dream and unrealistic thinking now that I am in this situation. It's never possible for me to start my own business at all, and the least I could do it just to keep searching for a job that pays well and suffice for me to support my family. However, until now, I am unable to find one that allows that.

Being the one that decides on the direction of your company development and being the one in charge definitely makes one feel comfortable and superior. Most people tend to think that their opinion should always be the right direction, this is one of the reasons why there are so much office politics in most companies. One is unsatisfied with the management, one is feeling inferior due to scoldings from their superiors and managers, one is depressed due to the isolation from others (this itself may be resulted from so many different reasons: differences in culture, background, income, discrimination). It's just endless. Some times, it makes me wonder if cohesion and team work really exist. Perhaps, I have not been across a nice one yet which result is such thinking. Anyway, being your own boss enable you to choose the timing for your work, it may not necessary be office hours and this makes your life more comfortable as you can manage your time better. The time you start work can just be 12 pm, just to suit your lifestyle. However, please do consider the nature of your business and if it's viable to start at 12 pm  in the afternoon.

However, those of us who dislike making core and important decisions may not be suited to start their own business. You would need to take into consideration a number of different factors affecting your business, having a good and clear idea of the industry, your competitors, the ideal location of your office, the price of your services and products, the additional knowledge for your business, the other companies that you may need to cooperate with, what kind of marketing will you engage in...and so many more. Hence, for those who are unable to think, analyse and make a comparatively well informed decision will be unsuited for such a role. There may be a solution to this though, if you are rich enough, you can just hire someone to make such decisions for you. (If you are, you won't even need to worry if you can strive until your business reach a point where it's earning profit.) For the average, if we want to start a business, we have got to do everything ourselves until we reach a point where we can hire talents into our team and improve on the efficiency and functions of our business.

I don't even know why I typed the above post, I forgot what I was thinking. I think it's something along the line with my brother suggesting  that if he were to try starting up his own business, will I collaborate with him. Well, it's hard to say, but I am sure once he completes his education, he won't think this way any more he would be in debts which he is unable to return until perhaps 20 years later? I did warn him about this fact, it's just that he refuses to believe what I said and believe that the economy and wage rate will be better once he gets his degree. It's his life, I can get him advise but I am not the one to interfere with his decision, that's why even though our dire financial situation, we didn't stop him from doing what he wants. However, he would have to take loans for his education and look for a guarantor for his loan. To me, it's really almost like jumping of a cliff.

Anyway, who knows, he may end up being successful. It's a risk he is going to take and I am curious how much he could achieve. We will all know the result in the near future.
