I realize that the choice of the keyboards actually matter to me. For obvious reason, the rubber dome keyboard that I am using in my workplace is sticky, noisy and gives a bad typing postures as my table space is too small for me to use such a long keyboard. However, due to security reason, the company does not allow personal touch to your work desktop, hence, bringing your keyboard does not work as well. Unfortunately, I feel much better typing and work at home due to a more comfortable posture and a suitable keyboard for my use.
One reason I like mechanical keyboards is due to the wide choices of switches to allow you to choose one which fits your typing style. Unlike others, I prefer typing without using much spam. Of course, it will be a different story during gaming. However, when I typed for long hours using rubber domes keyboard, the snap coming from the keys due to the rebound of the rubber tends to irritate me. It could be due to my lack of control when pressing down the keys too fast when I rush my reports or emails. The keyboard doesn't suit my typing style at all. Moreover, it requires quite an amount of force for the keys to be registered. Unlike mechanical keyboard, you will not need to bottom out the keys in order for you to have the keys registered. To satisfy your curiosity, I am currently using brown switches and I am planning to get red ones next month. I was hoping that I could use the brown ones for work and red ones for my home desktop. Well, it is not definite but I am seriously thinking of speaking to the IT department to provide some leeway as the keyboard the company provide is quite unusable.
In addition to the ease to register the keys, it also provides you with a better typing experience. This may be highly dependent on personal preference. For some reason, I like to type on mechanical keyboard more than rubber domes keyboards due to the overall feel, it feels as if you have more control over your keys.
However, many complaints on mechanical keyboard would namely be the price and the noise that it cause when you are typing. Most don't use blue switches in the office unless you have a personal office of your own, you may not want a blue switch at your work place. Even more so when your work place is extremely quiet. The whole office may just hear you typing. Well, unless you have understanding bosses and colleagues, my advice is don't try to use blue switches in office. For typing, brown switches would be slightly more suitable as it is comparatively quieter and it gives a slight feedback when you key is registered. In other words, you can feel the actuation point of the keys. One point to note, most believe that the choice of switches depends mainly on your personal preference and I do believe that too. However, it also depends greatly on what purpose you are using your mechanical keyboard for.
As for the price, it will be quite difficult for us to find a mechanical keyboard with a price that matches the average price of a rubber dome keyboard. Most of the time you can get five rubber domes keyboard when you bought one mechanical keyboard. Well, that is a rough estimation. In that estimation, I am assuming that you will find one of the cheapest mechanical keyboard out there in the market. Hence, the estimation is not representative of the actual prices in the market. Well, I can only justify this with: if you would like to enjoy a quality product and a better typing experience, then you will have to invest slightly more. It is the same for all other kinds of products and services we have in the market. For me, since I am one who type quite a lot, it is a worth while investment. However, suppose if you just use your keyboard for may be several hours once of twice a week, a rubber dome keyboard may prove to be suffice.
Well, in this post, I just like to point out that some people thinks that keyboard is just an input device for our desktop or laptop. It does not make sense to spend too much on them and it will be better if you spent the money upgrading your hardware. Yes, upgrading your hardware does gives you a better computing experience. However, having a good input device gives you a better typing experience, in particularly my case, a comfortable typing posture.
After prolonged typing in my office, I always feel a sharp pain on my wrist especial when I need to strain my hands to reach the arrows keys. Due to large amount of data entry and a cram work space, I am starting to feel the strain of my hands everyday after work. In normal circumstances, most would stop typing and working once they are home. However, the comfort is just way to different. Moreover, if I ever stop working and trying hard, it will mean the end for me. I would not be living any more. Hence, no matter what I will carry on searching for a better job opportunity and continue learning and jotting down my progress.
Well, I guess I drifted slightly off-topic for a moment there. Now back to our subject, I feel that the choice of our keyboard affects the way we type and matters as the overall experience will be different definitely.
That's the post of the day.
I will try to post if I am not tired tomorrow.
Rest sufficiently for work and school, not forgetting to eat well and relax well before that. I understand not all of us have the privilege of doing that. Some of us might be rushing with work, in which we are forced to bring home to complete, some of us might be drown with home work given by your lecturers or teachers in school. Remember however hard you work, it is important to rest so that your brain can function more efficiently. The things you find difficult to do may turn out to be easy the moment you wake up after a good rest. So! Rest well no matter how busy you are. Get some sleep and we will see you soon.
