Thoughts on Saturday 12 Sep 2015

I have been spending time thinking and researching on the things I can buy/do for mum’s upcoming birthday. However, there is nothing that meets my expectations. Either because my expectations were to high, or because I just do not have enough budget for the possible presents. It is still one of my worries as of today. Unless I settle upon something, I probably won’t be able to focus.

Yesterday when I asked my brother for ideas, he replied he do not have extra money to celebrate her birthday. Yes, it’s been a long time since we celebrate any of our birthday. It’s been over 10 years since I last received any birthday present from my family.

So why did I decide to celebrate all of a sudden?

It is not a sudden decision. I have been wanting to celebrate and see her smile, but I do not have the financial means to in the past. Right now, I think I can afford it. That’s why all the fuss. Maybe I am just not used to it.

GE2015 in Singapore
I watched the live telecast for the results of our country’s election. The results are pretty predictable. Yes, our government had been decided for the next five years. It’s all citizens’ hope that the government will lead the country in the right direction. Right direction itself is ambiguous. Different people will have their own definition of right. That’s what you often see in politics where different parties have their own explicit ideology. I take that back. It is not always explicit. You can observe one party may lean more towards social issues while the other is concerned more on economic issues. So what is right then?

I am probably not a good person to answer this question. There are plenty of capable individuals out there debating on similar questions. You could search easily for blog posts and articles discussing on the various policies proposed by different political parties. Taking a look at those would give you a rough idea. However, I realise something important. We tend to believe what we read without analysing the agenda and purpose of the writer. And when we believe in what we read, it is possible for our opinion to be swayed and influence. We might change our perspective on certain issues. Not sure if you have experienced this yourself.

Well, I did. I don’t think I made the wrong this elections. However, in many conversations during the elections, the opinions I raised to my colleagues and friends may not be my own opinion. Hence, I decided I should have more control over my thinking and analyse before I believe in something blindly.

How about you?
