A little something on mechanical keyboards - Just a normal person perspective..

Recently, due to personal interest in typing, I went to read up a little about mechanical keyboard. The reason I went to find out more was because I don't understand what justify the price of the keyboard. Normal keyboard (Membrane keyboard) that we used cost about SGD $12 around there. However, the mechanical keyboard, the cheapest I was able to find was the Poseidon mechanical keyboard with blue switch and that cost around USD $70. If we were to convert to into Singapore dollars, it will be around SGD $87.55. This is around 7 times the price of a normal keyboard.

Surfing across the web, there are many webpages that explains how the mechanical keyboard works and the different switches that they used. The thing I learnt was that the type of switches you would eventually enjoy is largely dependent on personal preferences and the environment that you are going to used the mechanical keyboard in. Due to the different design of the switches, the sound they make when you type would vary much as well. According to the websites and videos that I came across, the most popular switches among keyboard enthusiasts are the red, blue and brown. There are other switches like the blacks, greens, and some others which I couldn't understand just yet. Amongst the red, blue and brown, the blue will be one of the loudest when you type and this is due to the clicky sound that the switch produce.

So why do people like to buy mechanical keyboard when they cost so much more? The common reasons that were listed was because it improves the accuracy of typing and gives a better typing experience overall. Hence, for those who spend long hours on their computers typing would feel the difference typing on a mechanical keyboard compared to the membrane keyboard. For some, they even commented that once you switch to a mechanical keyboard, it will be difficult for you to return using a membrane keyboard. Many gamers would like a mechanical keyboard due to the various customizable keys as well as the ease of doubling on the red mechanical key switches which improves their gaming experience. I have also read comments on Amazon, some who claimed that they are writers or journalists commented that mechanical keyboard actually aid in the speed of typing as well. There was one who reviewed that he/she typed 20% faster on a mechanical keyboard compared to a normal membrane keyboard. (Don't ask me how he/she measured that because I have no idea at all.)

For me, my take on mechanical keyboard will be "?". I have never really try one before, hence, I know it would be unfair for me to comment on anything yet. Therefore, for now, it will still be a question mark. I don't know if the improved in typing experience really justifies the price. The only thing that attracts me to get one was the amazing customizable back lights in mechanical keyboard. I always typed late at night when my family members are all asleep and lights are off. It's difficult for me to pin point the exact position of the keys resulting in many typographical errors when I learn how to program and when I jot down my thoughts here. I was wondering should I get for myself as a birthday present? I am not sure. Still thinking about it.

Those who have experience using such mechanical keyboard can share their experiences with me so that it can aid in my decision on whether to spend such an amount on a keyboard. I am not rich, I could probably only afford it once I get my salary. (Though, I rather save it up to get my cert in future)

Tell me about it if you happened to came across here by accident.

Ciao...
