As the title stated, this post will be my personal review of the online music game osu!. So first thing first, the URL for the osu! would be http://osu.ppy.sh/. Upon clicking, you will be able to download the game from the page as well as many skins and beatmaps to improve on your gaming experience.
What interesting about this particular rhythm and music games compared to others is that it is less taxing on your computer and you'll be able to multi-task while leaving the game running. It is suitable for me as I used to have a laptop that overheated quite easily. Hence, there are limited programs I can run with the laptop. Using the laptop, I could run this program just fine and it plays smoothly for single player mode which was quite good to me at that time. Thus, if you are looking for a game that is less taxing to your computer, you may consider this game if you like music and enjoying listening to different songs throughout your game play.
Apart from the program not being taxing to your computer, it is also a free-to-play games. Hence, it's great for casual games who would like to occupy their spare time. Most of the beatmaps, skins and musics are customizable. You can download those which are made by other users, or you can choose to customize one yourself and share what you have created with others. I can say that I really appreciate this feature in this game. For those of you who loves to play rhythmic games on phones and console, you will realize most applications have limited songs selection, and if you would like more songs either you need to pay for it or upgrade your game to perhaps the next season or a newer version. However, it's a different case for osu!, you will be able download unlimited number of songs, depending on how much space you have in your computer to store the files you want to download. Moreover, there are no hidden charges for the game itself, unless you want to enjoy a higher bandwidth while download the songs and beatmaps (which you can do so by donating to osu!.
Once you downloaded the game, you will need to register on the webpage as a user in order to log into the game itself. However, if you are playing single mode, you will not need internet connection for the game play. I really appreciate this features as I experience lost of internet connection quite a number of times due to problems with regards to the service provider. When you are forced to stay at home and you have no internet connection, it may get really bored. Therefore, installing this game in my computer was a really good idea for me as I can keep myself occupied during such incident.
Now, you have registered on the webpage, you will have your own osu! page which indicates your profile information and various statistics of your gameplay such as your accuracy, the number of times you play osu! and your score for various modes and songs. This is useful if you have friends playing this with you and when you get competitive you would like to retrieve his information and ranking to compare against yours. For this game, you may not need the player to do online in order to do that, just key in his user name in osu! and you can find all the information about his gameplay on the profile page. There are some who get quite famous as they are extremely good in the game. You can find videos of their gameplay in youtube. Well, I have forgotten who are the famous ones as I haven't touch this game for quite some time as I spent most of my spare time now studying and reading.
Just to let you know something interesting about this game, and that is it does have a worldwide tournament. Due to the customizable gameplay, the difficulty levels ranges from extremely easy to extremely crazy. I really mean crazy, I guess those guys really play and practice a lot in order to play those with insane difficulty level. This is why, tournaments can be held and it is also one of the features which enable the game to last till this date.
Now, I won't be going on to explain how the different modes of the games are to be played. However, I will move on to my personal take on this game itself. The tutorials for different may be found in youtube or even osu! itself when you first started playing it.
As for me, I enjoy listening to music and tapping along with the rhythm quite well. Hence, I find that this game is really enjoyable and fun to play with. In addition, I have some friends who play this as well, it is one of the platform where we bond and socialize apart from meeting out for dinner, which we rarely do now since most of us are drained after work. Based on my financial burden (if you read my previous posts), I will not be able to afford games such as diablo 3, starcraft and more, hence this is one of the games which I can play freely without any hidden costs and enjoy the maximum gaming experience even without spending. Kudos to osu!. Last, but not least, I enjoy the competitiveness of the gameplay and having your statistics recorded down as that you know whether you have improved since the last time you play. Also, I am able to peek at my friends records any time as well, which is really a convenient feature to have.
I definitely recommend this games to those who enjoys music and would like to spend their free time on games involving music yet don't use to spend much buying consoles and softwares. This is really an alternative which is worth your time and effort to find out. There are a variety of modes and most are interesting to explore and play with in your spare time. Hence, give it a try since you will have nothing much to lose. :)
