Like the title says, what does year end means to you? I can't say for sure if year end means anything to me at all. Many times I just let it past like this. There is nothing much to do, and nothing much to say during this point of the year. Most of the time my family will be busy with work or brother will be busy with friends. We just don't celebrate this time of the year together. Well, different people have different ways of celebrating year end, maybe not celebrating can be beneficial as well. At least, we could save some money this way.
Well, I overheard an incident in the normal supermarket in my country. Apparently, the supermarket caught a lady who stole sweets and chocolate twice or thrice in the same branch. When the manager was about to report the case to the police as they do as usual when many senior citizens tried to do that when they have no means to buy them. This lady kneels down immediately and begs for a chance. She declared that she was a foreginer who had a scholarship and graduated from one of Singapore's universities, she is currently working in a bank earning more than SGD 3.5k per month. If they were to report, it would ruined her future. Seeing her knelt down, the manager eventually softened and let her off. However, there were quite a number of employees who felt unjust for other older citizens who got reported right away when they think that they should let them off with warning instead. What makes it worse was the lady can afford those goods, yet she just doesn't want to pay for it. Why should such a person be let off? What are my thoughts? Well, most of the citizens here would not even get a scholarship for university education, most of them are sponsored for foreigners. To say the truth, we pay a high price for the education in our own country. Hence, because of that, most of us need to repay a huge amount of loans. In addition, without a 'scholarship' title, it is much difficult for us to secure a job with more than SGD 3k salary once we graduate. While having to repay a huge amount of loan with less than SGD 3k (average seems to be sgd 2.5k) salary, 20% of citizens earnings are compulsory lock into a pension plan. To be honest, I don't see why we should let off foreigners who steal in supermarket when they can afford to pay for the goods off. (Of course, I don't mean those low wage foreigners. It is the 'foreign talent' which they (with or without the consent of their people) give their love to.) I just felt unjust for many senior citizens who got reported to the police resulting in an overwhelming amount of fine and a record with the police. They were the one who contributed to the society in the past. I think there is something quite wrong with the mentality of the manager and many others. Who knows, I may be wrong.
However, I guess many of you would feel the same way. You tend to be lenient to people who you consider as your inner circle, those outer circle needs no compassion. Things work just the opposite here. If you were born here, you are classified as the lower class of all. If something can be done, then if might not be as bad. Truth is, nothing could be done.
Normally, I wouldn't like to gossip much. Most of the time I am indifferent between such incidents as if everything that happens is hopeless as people tends to be stupid. (That's what I tried to persuade myself to think so that I can feel better.) This time is the same case. However, the person who told me this worked in that supermarket and witnessed this herself. She told me that it is such a pity that she had no chance to study and not knowledgeable to write about this case. If not, she would probably post it in forum letting others know what citizens and foreigners are treated in the country. So I guessed, it happened not just once for her to say that. To be honest, I feel that she would just bring trouble to herself if she did that. So I decided to write a post in place of her. Though my explanation is blur and unclear (they are meant to be, or troubles would come), I hope this satisfies her little hope of keeping other informed.
Time passed quite quickly today, and I didn't get much done today. I was supposed to do my running today, yet I realize I don't own any sports shoes anymore. There is nothing much I could do about that. I managed to apply for the course I was aiming for today but later realize I applied for it wrongly. Perhaps, I will try it again tomorrow or just email them asking for a solution. Well, the instruction on the page wasn't clear enough. It said attach your ID, and I did it exactly. However, when I read the application procedure in the end, you have to attached other bunch of stuffs too. They should indicate that in the page as well. Why didn't they?
It's weekend! Hope you enjoy yours. Let's just smile as much as we can, and try to make this world a better place.
