Well, if you are unfamiliar with the the law of inertia, here is a little refresher:
"An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed in the same direction unless acted upon with an unbalanced force."
The law not only seems to describe motion, if seems to describe human behaviour as well. When we are at rest (or perhaps feeling comfortable would be a better description as we can all relate to it), we often do not feel like changing our lifestyle or our behaviour. There may be opportunities in our surroundings that we may be able to embrace. However, due to inertia, we just don't reach out and grab the opportunities presented to us.
So why do such inertia exist? Is the inertia bad?
I think I am not an expert in the matter. However, there are quite a number of people who pointed out that humans are generally resistance to change. We tend to be satisfy in our current routine and we might feel uncomfortable breaking our familiar routine to engage something we might not be familiar with.
In my opinion, inertia exists because of uncertainty. In every change, there will be a certain amount of risk attributed to it (be it a small risk or a big one). For thinkers, we might think about the different scenarios that the change might bring about. I am one of those who does that and realise that I will never come up with the exact scenarios due to the risks involved. Given this uncertainty, I find it easier to predict the future with my current lifestyle. Hence, there might not be a need to take unnecessary risk with a slight difference in rewards. Of course, this is what I experienced. Thus, it may be different from what you have in mind.
Whether this inertia is bad or beneficial, it really depends on the situation. If the opportunity present a better reward and increase your overall well-being, then missing the opportunity due to the reluctance to change and step out of your comfort zone may not bad for yourself and perhaps people around you. However, if the opportunity eventually makes your life worse-off, then this reluctance might be a good thing. There are always many ways to view a problem, an issue. It simply depends on yourself. How you want to deal with it? Which perspective you prefer to look at it from? These decisions can make one's life simple and happy or complicated and difficult. So far, I have chosen a complicated and difficult path for myself. However, I am working on being more positive and looking towards the brighter end of the road.
Why am I posting this out of the blue?
Basically, I had a hard and difficult decision to make recently. To be very honest, I screwed up everything regarding the decision and my lifestyle. I failed to make a prompt decision and implicate a number of parties because of this. I am working on solving this existing problem. After which, I should reflect upon this incident and learn from my mistakes so that such troubling situation will not occur again. In addition to that, I will be stepping my first baby steps to work towards looking life in a positive and bright manner. I hope it will work.
Additionally, I would like to share the experience so that others who came across the same problem will have an idea of what they should do. Hence, I recorded this down out of the blue. Mistakes are never something to be proud of. Most of us tend to feel embarrass when we know we are making mistakes in life. However, we fail to realise that these mistakes made actually help us to grow as a person, as an individual. I don't regret making this mistake, but I will not let the same thing happened again. Have the courage, and have the will, have the perseverance and the strength to put my ideas and my decision across. This is something I will work on and I will achieve.
Hope that this post helps those who are having similar problems and looking for answers around the web.
Smile more and look forward to a great day tomorrow. ☺
